"what_to_expect": "
A Namu'a day trip is one of those experiences that's hard to beat in Samoa. The journey starts at the wooden wharf in Mutiatele, on the east coast of Upolu, where you'll spot the Namu'a Island Beach Fales sign right off the Main South Coast Road. When you arrive, either catch us at the jetty or pop into Ieti's Store across the road and we'll take you across by boat.

The crossing takes around 10 minutes, and you can stay as long as you like before flagging one of the island guides when you're ready to head back.

Once on the island, a fale is yours for the day. There are twelve in total: five traditional open fales and seven with iron roofs, giving you a shaded spot to drop your things and settle in. Shower rooms and toilets are available for day visitors too.

From there, the day is entirely your own. The snorkelling is excellent right off the beach, with corals and small clams close in and more to explore two to three hundred metres out. Fins and a mask can be hired for 10 WST; just let us know before departure or add it on when booking so we can bring the gear over. We have two kayaks also available to hire at 20 WST per kayak.

For something a little more active, the jungle trek to the island's summit takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour return. It starts just behind the fales with concrete steps before turning to a dirt trail, and the views from the top are well worth the climb. Keep an eye out for bats resting up in the canopy.

At low tide, you can also walk a full circuit around the island in about an hour. There's also volleyball net set up on the island, so feel free to bring your own volleyball.

The atmosphere on Namu'a is peaceful and tropical. It's a family-run operation, and that warmth comes through from the moment you arrive. Just keep in mind that the open fales, while lovely, can be a little exposed in windy or rough weather; the iron-roof fales are a good call if conditions look uncertain.

And bring everything you need for the day: food, towels, sunscreen and insect repellent aren't available on the island. The day trip price covers your return boat transfer, use of a fale, and car parking at the ferry jetty.
",
